28th December, 2011
We
have declared Crystal Swing for Doncaster tomorrow and Richard
Johnson takes the ride. He appears in good form and we are hopeful
that he will run a good race in a competitive event.
Worked
a few horses this morning including some youngsters. It is always
pleasing when young four year olds begin to show promise on
the gallops and hopefully I saw a couple of future winners this
morning.
Great
to see Kauto Star on the front pages of the newspapers. The
British public love animals and the more we can sell animals
to the general public, the more they will follow horseracing.
Talking
of animals, Barnsy came this morning to book his lift to Doncaster
tomorrow. I never mind giving him a lift because thanks to his
hearing aid, it is like travelling on your own.
I
watched Tottenham win last night. I have been a Spurs fan all
my life and have trained for quite a few as well. manager Harry
Redknap has horses with Alan King and Charlie Longsdon, but
there again he bought Peter Crouch so he can't always be right.
27th December, 2011
I
don't know which horse got the bigger reception – Kauto Star
after his famous win in the King George, or Stop The Show after
his excellent third in the three mile chase at Towcester. Quite
a few of the Adlestrop Club turned up to see Stop The Show back
to form and let's hope he can get his head in front soon.
Tiger
Line ran her usual game race and now will be retired to the
paddocks. Let's hope she breeds a horse as tough as her.
A
busy morning schooling and all going to plan with Excelsior
Academy , Whichever, Motou and Fair Breeze all jumping well
and ready to make their hurdling debut's soon.
I
watched Kauto Star's win from Towcester where I have never know
an atmosphere like it on a racecourse when he went past the
post. Everyone on the course was applauding and it was a memorable
moment in National Hunt history.
I
am pleased I backed Grands Crus for the Gold Cup in the morning
at 16-1 - as I have a hunch they will go for the Gold Cup with
him. But I still think Long Run will take some beating as he
looks a thorough stayer to me.
23rd December, 2011
Rich
Buddy has been declared for the three mile two novice hurdle
at Huntingdon on Boxing Day will Andrew Thornton onboard. Hopefully
the trip will be to his liking as he ran a pleasing hurdling
debut at Warwick .
At
Towcester we run Tiger Line and Stop The Show, both ridden by
Harry Skelton. The trip may be on the short side for Tiger Line
but there are few options for her at present. However, her stamina
should come into play. Stop The Show will hopefully also appreciate
the stiff track and has run well around the course in the past.
I
went to Caroline and Raymond Mould's drinks party last night
and saw lots of mates all in good form. Among those present
was my doctor John Disney, who I'm delighted to report looked
less well than I did, but he can reverse those fortunes by inviting
me to his cider tasting in the very near future. John's son
Guy, who you may have seen in the papers thanks to his enormous
courage since losing part of his leg in Afghanistan , will be
returning to the said country next March. As you can imagine,
his mother is not keen.
Watching
1976 edition of Top Of The Tops, have only just realised that
one of our staff Faisal, is the spitting image of Johnny Mathis.
Have tried to get him singing ‘When A Child Is Born' this morning,
but he is not keen.
22nd December, 2011
Worked
a few young horses this morning and good news all round. Had
visits from Ray and Jane Bailey, Marcia MacLeod and Walid and
Paula Marzouk. The Marzouks came to see Amore Mio who is now
back from hospital following his neck injury. Touch wood, things
are going as well as can be expected.
This
afternoon we had the annual lunch at The Kingham Plough that
was first initiated by Rhydian Morgan-Jones some years back.
It is safe to say that the guest list does not include any Labour
voters and that I, along with Charlie Gordon-Watson are the
only participants whose father was not a Lord. However it is
always great fun and my only regret is that I bought the opening
round.
21st December, 2011
Saticon
ran a cracking race at Ffos Las this afternoon on ground he
would not have enjoyed. He looks to be on the way back and hopefully
there will be a nice race or two in him before the season is
out.
Pak
Jack thought the combination of the revolting ground and fast
pace was not for him and we will have to look for better ground.
In
the bumper at Ludlow Ata Boy did not improve for a cross nose
band and we will now investigate his breathing apparatus. He
gave Timmy Murphy a lovely feel and I am sure once it is sorted,
he will show his class.
We
had a visit from Tot Calver, Geoffrey Howson and Matthew Houldsworth
this morning. Geoffrey is a very knowledgeable bloodstock agent,
which he should be at his age. Whilst Matthew will get the call
up for my quiz team at some point. Tot was pleased to see Whenever
had come out of his Ascot race well and is looking forward to
the next Dozen Dreamers outing.
The
Hepworths popped in with their Christmas pressies as well, so
it was a busy morning before setting off for Ludlow .
We
have had Kieran Shoemark riding out this week. As previously
stated Kieran's family is steeped in racing history and he was
allowed to school Stop The Show over baby fences yesterday.
Hopefully that will suffice as his Christmas bonus.
20th December 2011
Pak
Jack and Saticon are declared for Ffos Las tomorrow. Hopefully
Pak Jack will run as well as he did the last time he went to
this racecourse and with a smallish field hopefully will be
up with the pace and go at his speed. We are trying Saticon
out on the soft ground as he ran well at Sandown. He appears
in good form and it will be interesting to see how he gets on
if he does act in the conditions.
Ata
Boy has been declared for the bumper at Ludlow . Timmy Murphy
rides and hopefully the ground will ride well as Ludlow appears
to have missed a lot of the recent rain.
We
have made entries for Boxing Day to include Huntingdon and Towcester.
Boxing Day can be a bit of a nightmare and very difficult to
gauge what is running and where the jockeys are going but hopefully
this year we have kept it simple.
I
see Brendan Powell rode a treble yesterday. He looks to me the
best young prospect I have seen for a while. Luckily he has
the looks of his mother, he gets his work ethic from his father
whom I first knew some thirty years ago when he sat by the corner
of the bar of The Greyhound at Letcombe Regis. He was drinking
cola, with a horses in training book and the phone by him which
had no ‘beeps' but registered how much you owed after finishing
a call. He would ring up for every ride that no one else wanted
to sit on and luckily has not passed on his riding style to
his son.
19th December, 2011
On
the way back from Bangor where Phardessa travelled well, until
a developing wind problem stopped her in her tracks turning
for home and I think she may be off to the paddocks now. She
has done us well and owes us nothing and I am sure she will
breed some good horses. Persistent rain proved too much for
Great Hero and the heavy ground simply did not suit him.
On
Friday King Jack ran very well to be second under a good ride
from Peter Carberry, proving that three miles and soft ground
suit him these days. Whilst Captain Tidds travelled well for
a long way and his wind is now under investigation. Drussell
could not build on his excellent second from the week before
and race came too quickly for him.
The
drama on the day was Amore Mio's fall at the second last in
the handicap hurdle, when he would have been placed. He took
a nasty fall and fell on his neck. Although not out of the woods
yet, he is recovering at the Pool Veterinary Clinic near Uttoxeter
and should be back with us very shortly. He has a similar injury
to chasers Moorcroft Boy and Tricky Trickster who both raced
again and lets hope Amore Mio can do the same.
Although
I am sure many animal rights activists would make a case that
horses should not be made to jump any obstacle, I can assure
that you if that can see the time and effort that went into
helping racehorses following their injuries; they would have
a different perspective on the sport.
Many
thanks to everyone who helped with a very difficult situation
and let us hope Amore continues to recover and makes as quick
a recovery as possible.
15th December, 2011
We
have five runners declared for tomorrow. Whenever goes to Ascot
with Richard Johnson onboard. Captain Tidds and King Jack run
in the handicap chase at Uttoxeter whilst Drussell and Amore
Mio run the 2 ½ and 3 mile hurdles. There is snow forecast
for Uttoxeter so lets hope it is on. The runners at Uttoxeter
should go on the ground. Hopefully Captain Tidds has come on
for his first run whilst King Jack will undoubtedly come on
for this outing. Drussell wears cheek pieces for the first time
whilst Amore Mio wears a tongue strap.
A
busy morning with John Cantrill, Ian Dunbar and Dave Mason visiting
their young four year old Tenor De Guerre and seeing him go
through his paces on the gallops and over obstacles.
I
had an enjoyable day yesterday at Sharron Murgatroyd's Christmas
lunch where the star of the show as ever, was Steve Smith-Eccles,
the former ‘Del Boy' of the weighing room who came out with
the best line.
“I
know I am not the most educated and I make the odd parfait”.
To
which Jim McGrath replied, “do you not mean faux pax?”
14th December, 2011
A
fruitful work morning with many horses pleasing in their final
piece before running at the end of this week or next. Hoping
the ground at Uttoxeter will suit our runners on Friday.
On
my way to Newmarket to join Sharron Murgatroyd for her annual
Christmas lunch. Around ten of us have been getting together
now for the past twenty years. Regulars include Francome, Jim
McGrath and Smith-Eccles. New additions include Neil Doughty,
Vince Smith and Michael Caulfield. It is always a jolly affair
and I normally provide a quiz for the guest's entertainment.
No doubt I will report more on this subject tomorrow.
Note
with interest there is Kauto fever at Kempton with the news
he will be going for the King George. Where are all the people
who said he should have been retired after Punchestown? No doubt
they will resurface if he doesn't run well at Kempton – hopefully
he will run a blinder. Will be interested to see how Master
Minded gets on over three miles as he has been looking like
a stayer to me for some time.
Watched
Life's Too Short last night as Francome keeps telling me I would
love it. Very funny and right up my street. If you find Ricky
Gervais offensive there is something wrong with you.
13th December, 2011
A
busy schooling morning and thanks to a downpour, the schooling
ground was riding very well. Mr Quinlan and Mr Carberry did
the honours and it was good to get some youngsters off the ground.
Last
night was the Adlestrop Club Wine Tasting Evening thanks to
the Oxford Wine Company and Neil Gladding. A fun night was had
by all and the reds appeared particularly popular as none were
left.
We
made entries this morning for next Monday at Bangor and Plumpton.
I
didn't see Waley-Cohen's incident at Fakenham but as Warren
Marston said, “would you trust him if he was your dentist?”
but when you look at Marston, maybe Waley-Cohen was his dentist.
Decided
against running Drussell so quickly at Folkestone tomorrow after
his excellent second at Huntingdon on Thursday. Let's hope the
handicapper doesn't persecute him. Just Benny has returned home
lame which explains his poor performance on Friday. I am sure
he will bounce back.
We
had various owners visiting over the weekend including Jeremy
Brown and family and Martin Newman with Ruth Pretty. Jeremy
came to see Excelsior Academy on the gallops who he has syndicated,
whilst at the same time viewing Whichever who was an unlucky
second in the bumper at Ludlow .
Delighted
Martin Newman is due to come into the new Dozen Dreamers syndicate
with Whenever.
A
frosty morning in Adlestrop but hopefully not tomorrow as we
have some schooling to do. We have made entries for Uttoxeter
later in the week with some chances if the weather goes our
way.
I
went to my mother's 90th birthday tea party on Saturday. The
tea was loose leaf as my mother is not a bag lady, whilst her
granddaughters made the cakes. She was asked by one of her grandchildren
recently what she would like to do for her birthday. “Go on
holiday” was the reply, “where to?” asked the grandchild, “to
paradise” replied my mother. “How do you know you will get there?”
to which my mother replied, “I know a man on the door.”
We
did some schooling this morning and owner Dominic Ryan popped
in for breakfast. We were joined in the Horse & Groom by
Mick Barnes with a new haircut and a hearing aid malfunctioning.
Dominic has a nice young horse called Dash Sweeney who is due
to come back to us in the New Year following a break.
Phardessa
is declared at Lingfield tomorrow where she will run in a tongue
tie for the first time. Hopefully she will put her last run
behind her.
Trespasser
looks a horse to follow having won the bumper at Taunton last
night. Trained by Sheikh Mohammad's right hand man, John Ferguson
in Newmarket , by all accounts won like a group horse. At the
age of three, looks like Denman.
Sad
to hear of Denman's retirement today. However I was fortunate
enough to be there when he won his Hennessey and his Gold Cup.
Our
luck must change soon. Two great runs this afternoon from Drussell
and Whichever but once again, we have had more places than a
Liberal Democrat.
Drussell
ran into a handicapped good thing at Huntingdon but ran a cracker
to be well clear of the third.
Whichever
was beaten by the narrowest of margins in the bumper at Ludlow
with the third horse miles behind. I am sure it is only a matter
of time before they are winning for us.
Hopefully
Just Benny can do that for us tomorrow at Doncaster with Jason
Maguire onboard. The ground and course should suit him.
Tried
to get from Huntingdon to Ludlow in time for the bumper but
like Whichever, I narrowly missed out. If it wasn't for the
horrendous driving conditions, I would have sluiced up.
A
cold windy morning in Adlestrop but some satisfying pieces of
work put up by many of the string. We have declared Drussell
for tomorrow at Huntingdon in the handicap hurdle and Whichever
for the mares bumper at Ludlow . Hopefully Drussell will appreciate
the step up in trip, whilst Whichever has a each way chance
under Jason Maguire.
I
have been perusing the catalogue for Friday's sale at Cheltenham
. The breeze up is always interesting and quite a few good horses
have come out of it in the past. Let's hope we can find them.
The
office is depressingly covered with pink baubles thanks to my
secretary's mother, who her provided a cardboard box full of
them. Not only that, my secretary is delighted that Mister Newby
has sent us some pink flowers to thanks us for looking after
him on Monday. Unfortunately they go very well with the
pink Christmas tree but I have put my foot down on a pink Christmas
card this year.
Obviously
everyone at Adlestrop Stables were delighted to see Mister Newby
win at Plumpton yesterday. Given a fine ride by Richard Johnson,
he settled at the rear before moving smoothly through the field
to challenge turning for home in what looked a competitive bumper.
Richard recommended that we run him in a similar race in order
that he can gain more experience before going hurdling.
We
were all delighted for Colin Pocock who is an exemplary owner
and it is always fascinating to follow a horse through his purchase
at the Derby Sale to the winners enclosure.
Bold
Identity did not appear to like the course or the ground but
I am sure we will see improvement on a different track. I thought
Invictus was impressive the in the novice chase and looks a
horse to follow.
A
morning involving both faster work and schooling with a definite
chill in the air, which meant my puffa came out for first time
this season.
Late
morning I went off to see a filly and Roger and Chris Wernham's
at Lockinge. Barnsy drove as my car was in the garage so inevitably
we were late. I have know the Wernhams for many years and they
are excellent at breaking in young horses and it was great to
go down memory lane with them.
On
my way to Plumpton to saddle Bold Identity and Mister Newby.
Bold Identity got unsighted at the third on his last run and
lacked confidence thereafter. Hopefully today's run will increase
his confidence.
Mister
Newby ran well on his debut for us at Wetherby and hopefully
will cope with the soft ground in what looks a competitive bumper.
Saticon
ran with credit on Saturday on his first run for nearly two
years. Whilst Pak Jack could not cope with the heavy ground
at Aintree.
Rich
Buddy showed that once he gets a trip on good ground, he should
be troubling the judge on a pleasing hurdling debut at Warwick
yesterday.
Thanks
to the hospitality of Aiden Murphy, Rich Buddy's owner Lizzie
Prowting and I had good fun discussing with Alan King the benefits
of shaving off your moustache following Movember. I have been
sworn to secrecy and will go no further.
On
the way home I was kindly asked to owners Andrew and Jane Nicholls
for drinks and supper. The Nicholls are always good fun, as
are their friends - whom I mainly meet in car parks at Goodwood
and Ascot in the summer. Fellow trainers Paul Webber and Venetia
Williams were also in attendance and it is always good to catch
up with them.
Disappointed
to see Misha B go out of the X Factor. However her departure
was inevitable thanks to her press coverage but I for one look
forward to her starting to rear her head. Amelia Lily has a
great voice, as does Marcus Collins and my money is on Amelia
proving to be the comeback kid of all time.
On
our way to Aintree to saddle Pak Jack in the Becher Chase. He
is the outsider but hopefully he and Mattie Batchelor will enjoy
themselves and put up a good show.
Saticon
is running in the Pertemps Qualifier at Sandown today. He has
been off for a couple of years so no doubt he will clear a few
cobwebs away with this effort.
Rich
Buddy is running in the maiden hurdle at Warwick tomorrow with
Tom O'Brien onboard. He has been working and schooling well
at home and although it is a competitive event, I am sure he
will enjoy the better ground.
A
busy but pleasing work morning with the string still in good
form. Looking forward to running Bold Identity and Mister Newby
at Plumpton on Monday. Richard Johnson has been booked for Mister
Newby and hopefully he can continue to show the promise he did
at Wetherby.
I
had an enjoyable evening at the ROA Awards dinner on Thursday
night. I had an entertaining journey in the lift with Sir Henry
Cecil who as ever, was delightfully humorous and was convincing
himself that Big Bucks would beat Frankel for the Horse Of The
Year Award. He caused great amusement when collecting the award
for Frankel, he apologised to everyone that Frankel couldn't
be there to collect the award himself but he looked forward
to seeing everyone next year. The horse received a standing
ovation, once again emphasising that it is a sport of horseracing,
not necessarily about people.
Interesting
to see the reaction to Jeremy Clarkson's comments. If he is
such a bad man, why do so many people want him to be Prime Minister?
Pak Jack has been declared for the Becher Chase on Saturday
with Mattie Batchelor onboard fresh from his Hennessy success.
They are two characters and Pak Jack will be wearing cheek pieces
as Mattie does not need them as he has enough cheek as it is.
The old horse seems in good form and let's hope he puts up a
good show.
A
good schooling morning where we had a visit from the Hepworths
and Gill Hawkins. Sadly my office has its annual pink fluffy
Christmas tree thanks to my secretary. The only good thing is
I have opened my advent calendar and had my first chocolate
from it. Don't be surprised if I eat them all before Christmas.
Off
to the ROA Awards tonight at the Hilton where many owners will
be present.
Saw
Willie Carson in the jungle last night. Looks as though he is
enjoying himself as he is a proper racing man and is used to
being surrounded by rats.
