Speaker Evening

the Club is always keen to support Adlestrop and culture and
therefore all members are invited to a speaker evening in
Adlestrop Village Hall on February 16th starting at 8pm. The
speaker is George Fiend, who will give a humorous and musical
look at the book, Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. There will
be baked potatoes and fillings following the talk and wine
will be available.
Members
of the Adlestrop Club are welcome free of charge, whilst guests
will be charged £10 per person. Please let us know by
no later than Friday 10th February if you would like to attend.

bar.
If
you do not have a team we can put you into one on the evening.

and no later than 22nd February. This will take the place
of our February event.

Royal Adlestrop
This
year's Ladies Day at Royal Adlestrop was once again a great
success. For those of you who did not attend, the tipping
competition went to George Kay, with second and third places
going to his sister and father - a rather annoying result
for everyone. Last year's winner Heggers, was close behind
the leaders along with the trainer. Thanks to Heggers for
turning the Fred Cooke Mug into a wonderful trophy, by having
it mounted on a wine box.
Many
people made a great effort with their pink charity shop items.
The ladies all looked wonderful, whilst last year's winner
Al, won the worst dressed prize with an engaging pink tutu.
The best dressed went to Eric Painting with his pink waistcoat,
which was worn to Ascot the next day by the trainer, thanks
to an incident with a glass of red wine on the Tuesday.
John
Salmon the bookie, this year made a small profit to make up
for last year's financial disaster and has kindly sent a cheque
to the Sue Ryder charity.
The
penalty shoot out was a competitive affair with our guest
of honour, Father Martin having three attempts all of which
proved he was the original left footer.
With
a jolly sing song to end, many thanks to everyone who helped
make it such an enjoyable day and we look forward to next
year.
We
will be in touch soon with details of the July event.
Stop The Show
Stop
The Show appears fine this morning after his run yesterday.
He didn't appear to let himself down on the ground therefore
bar significant rain very soon, we will put him on his holidays.
As he has proved at Plumpton and Fontwell this season, he
can be a competitive fun horse when there is give in the ground.
Thank
you to all who came to the picnic yesterday, we had a jolly
time in the middle of the course and let's hope we can return
there when the ground is more in his favour.
Will
be in touch soon.
30th April, 2011
Stop The Show and Cheltenham Preview
Stop The Show finished third yesterday
at Ffos Las. Richard Johnson reported he travelled and
jumped well before standing off at the open ditch and leaving
his hind legs behind. Richard reported that following
this mistake he didn't travel as well and may have saved a
bit for himself. Richard thought we should consider
putting some headgear on him in future.
He
appears fine this morning and we will see how he comes out
of the race before deciding on our next target.
Thanks
to everyone in the Adlestrop Club who supported last night's
Cheltenham Preview. Hopefully an entertaining evening
for all and hopefully members will be much richer by the end
of next week. The panel's Festival naps are as follows:
Choc
Thornton
Medermit
Andrew
Tinkler
Binocular
Rick
Allen
Anquetta
Phil
Smith
On The Fringe
John
Francome
Junior
Richard
Phillips
Poquelin
Will
be in touch soon with details of our next Adlestrop Club event.

Question Of Sport

Last night was the annual Adlestrop Club Question Of Sport.
Celebrity teams led by John Inverdale and Mark Pougatch contested
a fun evening of questions set by Adlestrop Club member Eric
Painting.
Among
the celebrity teams were Mick Fitzgerald, Cornelius Lysaght
and Andy Lloyd, whilst Robert Cooper as ever did a sterling
job as quiz master. The Pougatch team beat the Inverdale team
(which included yours truly) by one point. A remarkably close
contest and as ever went right down to the wire.
The
picture round is always a favourite among guests, and when
it came to picture 42 many in the room thought it was a young
Didier Drogba. There was much amusement when it was announced
it was Serena Williams. We look forward to next year's contest.

out with illnesses. We hope to reschedule the event
in January and will be in touch with a date very soon.
14th December, 2010
Call My Wine Bluff
Friday night's Call My Wine Bluff was a great success once
again. Six teams of eight attempted to find out which
of the panellists, Neil Gladding, Charlie Allan or Richard
Phillips was telling the truth about each wine.
As
ever some got it right, many got it wrong but all in good
humour. The winning team was hosted by Bob Coles who
ran away with the star prize of Italian fizz and a Cadburys
selection box.
Our raffle also raised money for 'Movember' for the prostate
cancer charity.
We
delighted to announce the details of the Adlestrop Club's
December event. This year, it will be a Christmas ‘Stroll
on the Wold,' on Monday 13th December, meeting up promptly
at 6.45pm at The Talbot pub in the square in Stow on the Wold.
Teams
of four will be allocated to go on a Stroll around Stow .
Each team will be given a sheet with clues of which pub they
have to drink which drink in. Last year's competition
was a great success as there are twelve pubs in total.
We will all meet up back at The Talbot for a finger buffet
at 9pm when the team that has the most correct drinks in the
most pubs, will win a star prize.
Please
let us know if you are able to attend by no later than Thursday
9th December. All Adlestrop Club members are welcome,
whilst any guests will be charged £10.

at £20 per head to include wine, pate and cheese.
Please book by the 18th November if you are able to attend.
If you are unable to get a team together, we can put you into
one on the evening.
21st October, 2010
Various
Stop The Show is back in faster work and in good form. It
is too early to come up with any targets for him yet but let
us hope the wind operation works and if it does, I am sure
we will be in business off his handicap mark.
We are
still looking for a few more members to join the Thornton
Alice partnership. We are looking for around 15 people to
join in on her syndication. She is at present pleasing us
in her work and has schooled well, and looks as though she
will be of great interest this National Hunt season. Training
fees will be £100 per month all inclusive and the cost
of a 15 th share would be £600. Please let us know as
soon as possible if you would be interested.
Thanks
to everyone who contributed to our quiz evening on Friday
night. Congratulations to the winning team of Charlie and
James Allan, Rick Allen, Gordon Clarkson and Al James. A fun
night was had by all.
Details
of the Call My Wine Bluff will be on there way shortly, but
please put the evening of Friday 26 th November in your diary.
October Event
This year’s October event will be a
general knowledge quiz held at Adlestrop Village Hall on Friday
15th October. The quiz master this year will be Richard ‘Tarrant’
Phillips. A variety of questions have been prepared the winning
team will be playing for the coveted, ‘Masterminds Of
Adlestrop’ trophy. The quiz will start at 7.30pm prompt
so please be seated and ready. Please let us know by 2nd October
if you wish to attend. There will be teams of four and tickets
to non members are £15 a head to include fish and chip
supper and alcoholic refreshment.
Horses
The Adlestrop
Club have an exciting winter to look forward to. Both
Stop The Show and Mr Mackay ran with distinction last season.
Stop The Show had wind operation during the summer which will
hopefully help him get his head in front for the Club.
This brilliant jumper gave the Club some great days out last
season and off his handicap mark, should once again be giving
members some exciting moments on the track. Mr Mackay
was narrowly beaten both at Hereford and Huntingdon last season.
With his favoured soft ground, we are sure his stamina will
bring about some more competitive runs this season and if
ever a horse deserved to win, it is this game son of Fraam.
Adlestrop Club Cricket Match
The Adlestrop Club cricket match took place yesterday. As
ever we played the locals in a 40 over match which ended in
victory for the home side, much to the disappointment of the
opposition's captain!
I feel
the match could have been won had my nephew Sebastian not
gone to The Fox at Broadwell for three pints of cider beforehand.
Last year he won the match for us, this year he lost the match
for us – however great fun was had especially as Warren Marston
bowled so badly but made up for it with his batting.
The raffle
raised money for Adlestrop Cricket Club and the Injured Jockeys
Fund and appropriately Choc Thornton turned out to pick out
the raffle tickets. The prizes this time being quite attractive
due to the fact that they had not been supplied by yours truly.
10th August
Cricket Match
This
year's August event will once again be a cricket match at
Adlestrop Cricket ground on Monday 9 th August. The
match will start at 2.30pm, however at 1.30pm there will be
a picnic lunch for all Adlestrop Club members. Once
again a Phillips invitational XI will play the local Adlestrop
team and there will be a raffle in aid of the cricket club.
This
promises to be a fun day, so please do come and watch.
Please
let us know by Friday 30 th July if you are able to attend.
Entrance
to the cricket ground is off the main A436 road between Stow
and Chipping Norton road, (in between the two Adlestrop turnings)
and opposite the Daylesford turning.
Look
forward to hearing from you.
Tattersalls Trip

Yesterday was the Adlestrop Club's visit to Tattersalls Sales.
A dozen members of the Club attended the impressive sales
complex and were treated to a guided tour in the morning and
a picnic at lunchtime. We had the pleasure of having the company
of Sharron Murgatroyd and Elaine Mellor for our picnic. I
stay with Sharron when in Newmarket . She has now been in
a wheelchair for twenty years and is a remarkable human being
and she entertained us magnificently during lunch.
9th July, 2010
Ladies Day at Royal Adlestrop

Yesterday we had our Ladies Day at Royal Adlestrop with The
Adlestrop Club. As usual there was a prize for the most tasteful
and tasteless item from a charity shop. Winner of the most
tasteful was Davina Heginbotham in a stunning green outfit,
whilst the most tasteless was very obvious on arrival. Rick
Allen's friend, Al James turned up in a stunning blue dress
with blue boater hat. His accessories included a wicker style
handbag and Al celebrated victory in some style and was lucky
to walk towards the end of the evening.
The tipping
competition was won by Heggers, who won the ‘Fred Cooke Cup.'
Thanks to a raffle and an auction, we raised £400 for
various charities including the Macmillan Nurses. A fun day
was had by all except of course our local bookmaker John Salmon,
who took a pasting thanks to Dandino.
The annual
penalty shoot out at the end, saw Charlie Allan back in goal.
This year the winner was George Kay, son of Brian who thanks
to his multiple entry, finally got once past the ‘big man'.
We all commented how we wished England goalie Rob Green had
turned up.
18th June, 2010
Cartmel Trip
On Sunday evening, some twenty members of The Adlestrop Club
converged in the Riverside Hotel in Kendall for drinks for
our Cartmel trip. A great time was had by all, despite the
picnic, and the racecourse looked after us in exemplary fashion.
If you have not been, it is a unique place and comes highly
recommended.
Amazingly
on Sunday night in true Adlestrop Club fashion, Club members
visited a club called Bootleggers where Barnsy was easily
the eldest person in attendance. Much amusement was had when
Davina Heginbotham, persuaded any attractive girl that walked
past, that it was Barnsy's birthday and asked would they pose
for a picture with him. Typically Barnsy joined in the fun,
there is much photographic evidence of Barnsy's fake birthday
and he was delighted to get so many birthday kisses.
I doubt
if Cartmel has ever seen The Adlestrop Club's tribute band
to Abba, ‘Bjorn's Belief'. Once again Barnsy was at the forefront,
wearing Davina's new white hat which she had purchased with
her winnings on the Placepot, whilst the girls of The Adlestrop
Club made a frighteningly impressive Abba like dance routine,
pictures will follow soon. Thanks go to all the Club members
that attended.
2nd June, 2010
Ladies Day At Royal Adlestrop
We are pleased to announce details of our June event.
By popular demand, once again we are having Ladies Day at
Royal Adlestrop taking place on Thursday 17th June in Adlestrop
Village Hall.
The
day will start at 1pm with a fizz reception followed by a
buffet lunch. We will have all the races from Royal
Ascot screened live in the hall with North Cotswold Bookmakers
there to take your bets. There will be a tipping competition
for the ‘Fred Cooke Mug'.
There
will also be a competition this year for the most tasteful
and least tasteful item bought from a charity shop (this does
not have to be clothing). There will be a prize for
the best and the worst item, which must still have the label
attached from the charity shop, so start looking now.
The
day will end with a bandstand sing song and when people have
had enough to drink, there will once again be a penalty shoot
out in the grounds of the hall. This beats the queues
and the vulgarity of racing at Royal Ascot and is sure to
be very popular so please book early.
Adlestrop
Club members are free of charge whilst any guests are most
welcome at £30 a head to include all food and drink.
There will be a charity raffle as well to spend your winnings
on.
For
more information please do not hesitate to ring the office.
Places are limited so please book early and let us know before
Friday 4th June at the latest if you would like to attend.
Overbury Stud Visit
Tuesday's visit to Overbury Stud went very well and some twenty
five members attended. Simon Sweeting was a wonderful
tour guide and we saw all four resident stallions. Kayf
Tara was the star of the show as he is such a promising National
Hunt sire, whilst Bertolini, Proclamation and Sagamix also
looked in great condition. We were then treated to a
tour of the stud and saw Proclamation do ‘the business' in
the covering shed.
Following
a very generous collection for the stud staff, we proceeded
to the Yew Tree at Conderton for a cracking buffet lunch.
The prices are very reasonable and a visit is highly recommended.
We
will have news of Stop The Show and Mr Mackay soon now that
we have had some rain.
30th April, 2010
April Event
We
are pleased to announce the Adlestrop Club event for April.
Thanks to the generosity of Simon Sweeting at Overbury Stud,
the Club have been invited to view the stallions that include
Kayf Tara and some of the mares and foals on Tuesday 27th
April. We intend to meet up at the stud at 10.45am for
an 11am start. Directions can be found on their website
at http://www.ovstud.co.uk/how-to-find-us
At
12.45pm we will then go onto the nearby pub, The Yew Tree
at Conderton http://www.yewtreepub.com
where we will have sandwiches and drinks.
Please
let us know if you are able to attend by no later than Friday
16 th April so that we can firm up on numbers.
Stop The Show
Stop The Show did his bit to raise money for charity
on the Thursday of Cheltenham. With Annie Adams riding to
instructions and teeing up Stop The Show for a run over fences
soon. It was great to see so many of the Adlestrop Club in
the paddock and Cheltenham and let's hope we can return one
day with a fancied runner.
22nd March, 2010
Cheltenham Preview
Monday evening, was The Adlestrop Club's Cheltenham Preview.
This was a huge success with the hall being packed to listen
to the views of John Francome, Richard Pitman and Choc Thornton.
We are so lucky to be supported by so many good people who
give up their time for zilch. Along with regulars Gordon Clarkson
and Rick Allen providing information from Ireland and some
fascinating statistics, the crowd were thoroughly entertained.
In the audience we were privileged to have senior handicapper
Phil Smith, who although he had the night off, was happy to
share his wealth of knowledge. Whilst Racing Post writer Peter
Thomas, a regular to Adlestrop sat on his hands in frustration,
knowing that he couldn't release all information on offer
to the outside world. Thanks to everyone's generosity around
£750 was raised for Cancer Research.
10th March, 2010
A Question Of Sport
Last night's
Question Of Sport evening was a great success. Thanks to the
excellent questions set by Adlestrop Club member Eric Painting.
Following the first round, the Inverdale team which included
the loyal trainer, got exactly zero points on football. However
they recovered to be just ten points off the winning team
hosted by Mark Pougatch.
Of the
twenty guest teams, the winners unfrotuantely once again included
Gordy Clarkson, rick Allen, John Dykoskwi and Jon Dadswell.
A great evening was had by all thanks to Chipping Norton Golf
Club and we look forward to next year.
26th February, 2010
A Winters Evening
Many thanks to everyone from the Adlestrop Club who attended
last night's Winters Evening. On behalf of everyone,
a big thank you to Richard Pitman, John Francome and Brian
Delany for giving up their time. I think all will agree
it was a special night where conversation flowed about the
great times with F.T.Winter. There were many memorable
stories and much laughter.
Once
again it emphasises how lucky we are in the Adlestrop Club
to have these opportunities thanks to the genuine kindness
of some good people.
We
also raised some money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust,
so many thanks to all.
18th January, 2010
Cheltenham Festival Preview
We are delighted to announce that this year's Cheltenham Festival
Preview will be at 7pm on Monday 8 th March in Adlestrop Village
Hall.
The
panel will once again include John Francome, Robert Thornton,
Rick ‘Statto' Allen and Gordon ‘Paddy Power' Clarkson.
After
last year's fiercely accurate predictions, this year is sure
to be very popular so please book your places as soon as possible
and by no later than 22 nd February.
Tickets
are free of charge to Adlestrop Club members and non members
will be charged £20 a head to include refreshments.
Look
forward to hearing from you.
